Vision Board

What is a vision board?

A vision board is a graphic organizer that can help you organize your thoughts, make a plan, and follow through on your goals. It can be as simple or complex as you like.

Use your research to create a vision board, mind map, or journal to keep for inspiration and motivation.

Recent research has suggested that vision boards pertaining to dreams about success are not as effective as actually making a plan of action (Farber, 2012). I say, why not make a vision board that shows BOTH?

Have you ever noticed that every year when January 1st rolls around, people make resolutions about some change they would like to make or goal they want to achieve? Check back with those same folks in March and over 90% of them will have given up on their resolution (Diamond, 2013). But, why? Many people have a dream or idea, however, they fail to make a PLAN to make it a reality!

Although a vision board may not guarantee your success, it WILL give you a tangible path to follow. I highly recommend creating your own vision board to keep you on track towards achieving your personal goals. Here are some great examples of vision boards and goal oriented mind maps if you need some inspiration.

A note if you are feeling a little lost…

Keep in mind, your path isn’t set in stone just because you write it down. You will change, your interests will change, and that’s OK!

For example, I was curious about everything as I entered college. I double majored in graphic design and nursing with a minor in photography. As I graduated college, I started to feel anxious because I couldn’t imagine just doing one job the rest of my life. And I haven’t. I have worked as a photographer, an artist, a science teacher, and soon, a counselor. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having more than one career interest, or changing your career path if you feel dissatisfied.

If you are still having a difficult time deciding on just ONE thing to be when you grow up because you have a wide variety of interests, DON’T DESPAIR. I am living proof that it IS POSSIBLE to do it all. Today’s fast paced society allows those of us with multiple interests and talents to create our OWN careers, custom tailored to our needs. However, this option increases the necessity to create a plan of action because the path you forge may be completely uncharted territory.

On that note, I want to leave you with this.
